Our Family Expeditions team just returned from an unforgettable three-week journey through New Zealand and Australia—packed with epic red stag hunts, helicopter rides through snow-capped peaks, and coastal city explorations that took our breath away. We discovered new hunting lodges that warmly welcome both sportsmen and their non-hunting companions, making them ideal for couples and families alike. From adrenaline-filled heli-assisted hunts to champagne on a mountaintop, this trip delivered some of the most awe-inspiring experiences we’ve ever had.
Here’s a glimpse into what we uncovered—and why we believe your will love it just as much.
1. New Luxury Lodge Discovered! Helicopters, Red Stags & Mountain Luxury on the South Island of New Zealand
This new luxury lodge on the southern part of the South Island offers a blend of incredible scenery, high-quality game, exceptional chefs and warm hospitality. It’s perfect for couples or families looking to combine adventure with luxurious comfort and top-tier touring experiences.
Highlights:
-
Josie harvested her first red stag after an exciting and rigorous stalk in the mountains—an unforgettable moment for all of us!
-
Helicopter drop off hunts for tahr and chamois through snowy alpine peaks. Josie, her cameraman and guide were dropped by the helicopter on snow filled mountains to stalk after New Zealand’s most sought after species. This is now one of our top family memories watching Josie’s excitement as she pulled off some amazing shots!
-
Scenic helicopter flight to Milford Sound, fresh lobster pick-up from the coast, and champagne on a mountaintop by a lake, landing on glaciers, and swooping next to high mountain waterfalls—hands down one of our favorite experiences, ever…
-
We visited the quaint lakeside town of Wanaka to shop for possum-blend clothing, gloves, scarves and throws and enjoy local cafes. I know, possum? New Zealand possums are not like possums in the states. They look more like a mink and their fur makes for warm, soft and beautiful items.
-
Toured with our guide down to Queenstown, stopping at lovely vineyards and charming villages along the way.
-
The lodge itself is stunning, with beautiful views, cozy beds, excellent chef prepared meals, and space to relax by the fire after a big day outdoors.

2. Queenstown: A Scenic Pause Full of Flavor & Fun
Queenstown is the perfect place to pause between hunts or add a few days of touring. Whether you’re with your spouse, adult children, or the whole family, this waterfront town offers something for everyone.
What we enjoyed:
-
Road the gondola up the mountain for incredible views of the city while watching people enjoy the Luge curving down the mountain. Josie was so scared of the heights that she had to grab a cup of tea inside!
-
Enjoyed fresh seafood along the banks of the lake, great steaks, and plenty of local flavor with Saturday markets taking place on the waterfront.
-
Shopped for more possum gear and relaxed in the walkable downtown.
-
Explored fun options for future guests: snow sports, jet boats, “shark” rides, bungy jumps, sky diving and scenic lake cruises.
-
Kevin may have found his all-time favorite ice cream spot – which is saying something as he may as well be an ice-cream sommelier. He’s still talking about it!
3. Timeless Adventures Again at One of Our Favorite New Zealand Lodges
We’ve worked with this lodge for years, and it continues to impress. Great hunting, incredible food, and thoughtful staff make it feel like home every time.
Why we keep coming back:
-
Red stag hunting through dramatic mountain terrain with expert guides. Josie made a successful stalk on an old stag with beautiful dark antlers.
-
A drive through wine country to reach the magnificent tahr property near Mt. Cook—breathtaking scenery and memorable animal encounters. Josie stalked to within 20 yards of the tahr shown below.
-
Nearby touring includes wine tastings, a chocolate factory, spa treatments, lake fishing and relaxing ferry rides.
-
Ideal for couples or families with older kids who want a mix of hunting and exploring.
-
The food is consistently excellent, and the lodge atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and easy to settle into.
- For those that wish to see a fantastic mix of locations on the South Island, this family owned and operated outfitter will build an amazing hunting and touring itinerary. Enjoy hearing amazing stories and history as you travel from the north to the south hunting stag, tahr, chamois, fallow, elk, goats and more.

4. Australia’s Hidden Hunting Gem Just Outside Brisbane
Just two hours from Brisbane, this family-run lodge offers a surprising variety of terrain and species. It’s a great add-on for those who’ve already hunted in Africa or North America and want something different.
What stood out:
-
Rolling hills, green forests, and even pockets of rainforest—not the dusty landscape most people expect from Australia.
-
Abundant game including Javan Rusa, Sambar, Axis, Red Stag, Black Buck, Water Buffalo, and more. Many record book animals are hunted on this land.
-
Warm, welcoming hosts made us feel right at home. They have grown up on this property and it was fascinating to hear their family’s history and the many great stories they have.
-
Accommodations are basic but comfortable—suitable for hunters and families who prioritize experience over luxury.

5. Beaches, Koalas & Iconic Cities: Touring the Aussie Coast
After the hunts, we wrapped up with a few days of touring across some of Australia’s most beautiful, iconic coastal cities. It’s the perfect way to relax and explore after your adventure—or a great option for non-hunting travel companions.
Family-friendly favorites:
-
Brisbane: Visited the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary where we petted a Koala, fed kangaroos, and enjoyed riverside markets and food.
-
Noosa Heads Beach town: Beach time, quaint shopping streets, whales and fresh seafood with oceanfront views.
-
Sydney: Opera House tour, scenic float plane ride to a tasting menu restaurant, harbor walks, food festivals, and even a “Christmas in July” celebration. We watched the ever changing colors of the Sydney Opera House from our luxury hotel.
