Trip Journal: Elk & Red Stag Scouting in Oklahoma

We headed to Oklahoma for three hands-on days to evaluate a new elk and red stag estate program. Our aim was to experience it the way you would—from the welcome at the lodge to the moments in the field—and confirm it delivers on great hunting, friendly service, and genuine fun.

Arrival Day — Settle In & Create Confidence

After a warm greeting and an easy check-in, we unpacked and grabbed a quick lunch before heading out. The property has a well laid out 100–1,200-yard range, so we started there to confirm zero and get comfortable. A favorite moment: Josie and Kevin put rounds through the same hole at 400 yards in a good show of competition—a proud father-daughter memory and a great confidence boost to kick things off.

That afternoon our guide took us through the property, pointing out how the wind moves through the draws, which meadows open into feeding areas, and the travel corridors the elk and red stag tend to favor. From the first hour, the program felt thoughtful, organized, and welcoming.

Day Two — Dawn to Dusk, with Plenty of Intentional Downtime

We were up before sunrise to hot breakfast burritos and fresh coffee, then eased into the dawn by ATV to get a read on movement. Soon after, we went on foot—skirting meadow edges, walking low, rolling hills, and slipping into timber as the light came up. Along the way we stepped into the all-glass, one-way blinds—a 360° view for you, while wildlife remains calm. They’re ideal for newer hunters, for observers who want to watch quietly, and for bow or rifle setups.

By late morning the September heat nudged both us and the animals to slow down, so we returned for brunch and rest. On the way, we stopped at the skinning shed to cheer on another hunter who had just taken a beautiful bull, and witnessed great examples of field care done efficiently and cleanly.

The afternoon back at the lodge looked like this: sports on the TV, a great brunch and pre-hunt snack, a nap, and time together—exactly the balance we want for mixed-interest groups. As the temps dropped, we headed out again to glass meadows and check bedding fringes. We saw several elk we liked and, knowing we had another day (We will keep them in our back pocket just in case), chose to take notes and see what the next day held. The evening closed with a glowing Oklahoma sunset, a last stop by the shed where two more bulls came in, and an easy dinner with tomorrow’s strategy.

Day Three — The Moment

Coffee, burritos, and a quiet ride out. We slipped into a known bedding area with the wind in our favor and worked the shadows of the timber. That’s when we saw him—broad and steady, watching from the cover. Josie settled on the shooting sticks, took a breath, and made a clean, confident shot. He was down.

There were happy tears, hugs, photos, and a few quiet minutes to soak it in. Back at the shed, hunters who had already tagged out came over to congratulate her. Josie jumped into the skinning process—the guide team moved like clockwork, making it quick, careful, and educational. It’s the kind of positive, supportive atmosphere that helps new or veteran hunters feel proud and included.
