Hunting
Your Spain Big Game Hunting Experience
Spain offers one of Europe’s most varied big game hunting experiences. The country is especially known for ibex, with several different subspecies available depending on the region and hunting goals. The outfitter used on the existing Spain page is the oldest single-owner outfitting company in Spain, established in 1975, with access to strong hunting properties and a long-standing reputation.
The hunting is typically region-specific, with each animal taking you into different landscapes. Some hunts include mountain hiking and glassing, while others may involve stalking through Mediterranean forest, oak and brush country, or more open terrain.
Species You Can Pursue
Ibex
Spain’s ibex hunting is the centerpiece of this destination. Depending on your goals, you may pursue Gredos Ibex, Beceite Ibex, Southeastern Ibex, or Ronda Ibex. These hunts can take place in areas ranging from mountain ranges west of Madrid to Mediterranean forest, the Sierra Nevada region, and the historic area near Ronda.
Chamois
Hunters may pursue Pyrenean Chamois in the northeast near the French border or Cantabrian Chamois in northwest Spain. These are challenging mountain hunts, especially during the rut in October and November.
Red Stag, Fallow Deer & Roe Deer
Spain also offers classic European deer hunting, including Spanish red deer, European fallow deer, and European roe deer. These hunts often involve early mornings, late evenings, glassing, patience, and careful stalking.
Mouflon, Balearean Goat & Wild Boar
For hunters wanting more variety, Spain also offers European mouflon sheep, Balearean goat, and European wild boar. Wild boar may be hunted year-round, including traditional driven-style opportunities or stalking, depending on the hunt.
What to Expect
Spain is a wonderful option for hunters who want an active but refined European hunting experience. The days may include scenic drives, glassing, hiking, stalking, and time in beautiful rural areas that many travelers would never see on a standard trip.
For those looking for something more adrenaline-filled, Spain can also offer driven boar hunting or bowhunting opportunities for ibex.
Activities
Touring Highlights That Pair Perfectly with Your Hunt:
Madrid
Most guests fly into Madrid, making it a natural place to begin or end the trip. Spend time enjoying the city’s history, architecture, restaurants, plazas, shopping, and museums before heading into the countryside for your hunt.
Historic Towns & Cathedrals
One of the best parts of this Spain experience is the access to quaint towns, cathedrals, and off-the-beaten-path places near the hunting areas. This gives non-hunters a meaningful way to enjoy each region while the hunters are in the field.
Spanish Countryside
The drives between hunting areas are part of the experience. Depending on the species pursued, you may travel through mountain country, Mediterranean forest, oak and brush country, small villages, and scenic rural landscapes.
Food & Wine
Spain’s food and wine are an easy highlight for both hunters and non-hunters. After a day of hunting or touring, evenings can be spent enjoying local meals, regional wine, and the relaxed hospitality that makes this trip feel so personal.
Shopping & Sightseeing
For observers or family members who do not plan to hunt, a dedicated tour guide can introduce them to nearby towns, shopping, sightseeing, and cultural stops while the hunters are in the mountains.
Mountain Hikes & Horseback Riding
For those who want active touring, Spain can include mountain hikes and horseback riding, making it a great fit for travelers who enjoy being outside but may not want to hunt every day.
Length of Stay / Itinerary
Every Spain Big Game Hunting and Touring itinerary is customized around the species you want to pursue, how many hunting days you need, and how much touring you want to include before, during, or after the hunt.
As a general planning guide, big game hunts are often built around approximately three days per game animal, though the final itinerary depends on species, region, travel flow, and your group’s goals.
