We never like to share with families the sad news that they started planning their bird hunt too late and that the lodge they want to visit is already booked up. This breaks our hearts every time because we want nothing more than to help your family have amazing experiences.
While we can never guarantee a lodge will have availability, there are some great tips for securing the dates at the lodge of your choice.
At most bird hunting lodges, the lodge gives the current guests the first right of refusal for the same date the following year. This is why some dates never become available: because the current guest wants to keep coming back!
So the key to grabbing you great dates at these lodges is to begin planning your hunt a year in advance.
To give you an example, let’s say your family wants to go on a pheasant hunt in South Dakota between September and November of 2025. You should begin planning this trip between September and November 2024. That way you have the best chance of catching the rarely opened dates when they first become available.
But what no one wants to do is be on the phone several times a week with lodges waiting to hear if there is a new opening.
A huge perk of working with Family Expeditions is that our lodges are calling us first with open dates. So when you reach out and tell us what date or date range you are looking for, we will first see if those dates are available. If dates are not available, we will make sure the lodge knows that we want the first right of refusal if dates should become available. We have the inside scoop and we stay in touch with lodges for dates so that you do not have to!
